Pandobac, a deposit for food delivery boxes

France
12 – Responsible consumption and production

Disposable food packaging generates major plastic pollution. A start-up has created a reusable food packaging bin to replace single-use delivery boxes.

Plastic packaging is the main cause of pollution of the planet's oceans. Each year, the ingestion of these plastics by marine wildlife causes the death of 1.5 million animals. The food industry consumes huge quantities of single-use plastic packaging, for distribution but also upstream, throughout the production chain. This is where Pandobac came in.

Fighting plastic pollution at its source

Every day in France, tons of fresh products such as fish are transported in expanded polystyrene packaging crates. This light and very resistant packaging is very polluting: expanded polystyrene consists of plastic honeycombed with gas bubbles. Its lifespan in nature can be up to a thousand years. Thousands of these crates are thrown away every day.

Fostering the circular economy

To limit the over-consumption of plastic by the food industry, the company Pandobac has designed a system of reusable delivery crates for food professionals. It is a plastic bin equipped with a QR code that allows to organize its circulation and reuse thanks to the deposit. The company supplies, collects and washes the bins for a monthly fee. This optimized logistics loop reduces waste and transportation.

In France from 2025, the anti-waste law for a circular economy will oblige professionals to finance the collection and treatment of their waste.
